lt is thought that one in four people in the UK now suffers from sleep disturbance, some 15 million of the population.

This partly reflects the ageing population, in excess of 40 percent of the total, since melatonin declines with age. By age 70 we synthesise in the pineal gland of the brain only around a tenth of the melatonin levels of the healthy adult.
